The first show of Circo no Ato presents a reflection on the city and urban relations

First show of Circo no Ato, Um dia de João, premiered at Crescer e Viver and already have in it’s resume more then 50 presentations. The show is presented in two different versions, the first version is made for stage, arena ans closed spaces, and the second is a retelling of the first version, created for open spaces such as streets, parks and squares.

Um dia de João proposes a reflection about the city and the urban relations. Directed by Natássia Vello, graduated in theater directing from UFRJ, musical direction of singer- songwriter Rachel Coutinho, movement direction by Tony Hewerton and art direction by Rui Cortez, uses the circus language to narrate the history of the day that the character João arrives at the city of Rio de Janeiro, showing a different look and relationship with the urban chaos .

The trajectory of this wandering is freely inspired by the poem “A named John” by Carlos Drummond de Andrade. References for the script includes the book “The enchanting soul of the streets” and the short story “The Man of cardboard head” , both of João do Rio. The city theme is approached from the look of João do Rio to the streets of Rio de Janeiro downtown, by the way the author decodes it’s souls and atmospheres.

 

synopsis

João goes through the streets of a city that changes itself, both by the events that invade it, such as fairs, pedestrian flows, as the constant constructions that reorganize and pile the public spaces. Oblivious to all this, he has a different look and relationship with the urban chaos, with the situations and the people he meet in his way. Get charmed by the brightness of the children and the beautiful women, vibrates with the energy of fair dealers, falls in love for the nights of bohemia, fears the flow of the streets and does not understand the reality of factory workers in the city. Accustomed to a slower pace, this character from another time and place, looking for a way of belonging amid the hectic pace of a place that never stays the same.
